A must play for all fans of Sherlock Holmes and players of this genre.. Hmm... as a game this one isn't very good, but the story itself I actually generally liked, though I feel like there were a few loose ends even after the big explanation at the end though only because the game dumps so, so much information on you. I was at least able to follow & figure out some of the plot points but others sort of felt like they came out of nowhere in the big explanation, though at the same time nothing seemed inconsistent or outlandish either. For a 2004 game it also looks pretty okay, not great, not awful though. The voice acting is a bit all over the place, I can tell it's the same voice actor for Watson as the more recent game I played but Sherlock is different and some characters (especially child characters) sound pretty bad & accents slip a bit too (the developers & actors are all ukranian, I believe?). But yeah, I recommend using a walkthrough for this one whenever you get stuck, saving often (there are a few points where you can game over & I hear there are some bugs too, though I did not experience any). The pacing is also a bit slow as you can only run in some areas which makes for a lot of slow wandering, and there's a lot of pixel hunting... but the story I think makes it worth it in the end, dunno. Get it on sale, I'd say.. The game doesn't look that bad for a point-and-click adventure. The movies were also nice especially since that meant I didn't have to curse over the useless GUI. The voice acting and music is quite enjoyable throughout the whole game. Unfortunately, there is no real sense of progress as you make it through the investigations. One of the puzzles is plain ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with no obvious reasoning, even in walkthroughs. Movement is extremely clunky which is a pain when you need to sneak or solve a timed puzzle. The set of final questions - which are optional - were just guesswork due to the extreme lack of coherency throughout the rest of the game. There is just too little coherency for this game to work as entertainment.. What could have been a really engaging story, with decent puzzles to keep the player engaged and provide a sense of participation/accomplishment, is unfortunately let down rather badly by poor game mechanics and puzzle choices. It is generally not possible to progress from an area until you have discovered every single clue there is, which is fair, but in that case those clues should be easier to find (with the difficulty resting on the subsequent puzzles and deductions). What this game does is leave the player furiously scrabbling for walkthroughs, or in my case, several walkthroughs, to find the answers to puzzles that are not just hard, but outright nonsensical. In one case, every walkthrough I have found simply gave up and brute-forced the answer through repeat tries.Unfortunately this all culminated in a stealth scene that, if failed, fails the entire game (which is a bit steep for a game without autosaves, didn't I mention? SAVE OFTEN!). Maybe it was the conversion to newer systems with expanded graphics, but character movements glitch through, over and behind objects, and this seems to have disrupted the mechanics of that scene, making it impossible to succeed, even when following walkthroughs to the letter. As such, the game was unplayable beyond that point, which I am told is about halfway through. So unless you see indications that these problems have been fixed, save yourself the expense... and the pain of an endlessly looping soundtrack as Holmes combs every square inch of every level with his magnifying glass, seeking THAT one final clue.Elementary, my dear Watson. Don't buy it!. Despite the game being old, it doesn't feel dated at all. It works OK, the resolution is up to 1600x1200 but what can you do and the story is totally amazing!! Lots of plot twists bring you to false conclusions about everything. It's a Sherlock Holmes classic this one.. Old, frustrating games like this should be banned from Steam. It's not good for your health. The frustration and pain it brings. Why can't I just have a decent Sherlock Holmes story!? It should learn from Testament of Sherlock Holmes, Crime and Punishment and Devil's daughter. Frustrating puzzle games should be banned from Steam! Stay away from them.. I enjoyed this, it was challenging, to say the least. I had to use walkthrough many times, since I just wanted to continue futher. The story was interesting, but some of the quizzes were too hard and annoying to pass.. A very nice game with tricky puzzles. The graphics are not the newest but its still a game which can be very enjoyable because of the story. In addition you must save your game with small breaks because of the lack of autosave and of game over situations (fire in the woods or the stealth part) where you must load the last save you made. Because of this issue I had lots of replays because I forgot to save my game and I had to replay 3 hours of the game again.
